Vassar choir, madrigal singers, orchestra to perform April 21

The Vassar College Choir, Women's Chorus, Orchestra, and Madrigal Singers will present a gala concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 21, in Skinner Recital Hall. The concert, which is part of the Vassar College Parents Weekend activities, is free and open to the public.

The Vassar College Choir and the Madrigal Singers, conducted by Charles Kamm, visiting assistant professor, have just returned from a concert tour of England, where they performed in Canterbury Cathedral, St Paul's Cathedral, and other venues. The choir will perform a cappella works from that concert tour, while the Madrigal Singers feature works by three Vassar composers: Patrick Castillo '01, Peter Lakes '01, and Robinson McClellan '99.

The Vassar Women's Chorus is conducted by Rebecca Rosenbaum, Vassar '97, a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Yale University. The group will perform a variety of works, including sections of the "Miserere' by early eighteenth century German composer Johann Hasse.

The Vassar College Orchestra, conducted by Eduardo Navega, play the overture to "La Forza del Destino" by Giuseppe Verdi. Navega will lead the choir and orchestra in a performance of "Nanie' by Johannes Brahms, set to a text by German romantic poet Friedrich Schiller. The concert concludes with all four ensembles, conducted by Kamm, performing choruses from the opera "Sir John in Love' by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
