Poughkeepsie Institute – Waterfront Findings

The Poughkeepsie Institute will release the findings of this semester's study of "The Poughkeepsie Waterfront" on Monday, May 7, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. next to the Vassar Boathouse, right on the Hudson River.

At 7:30 the same evening, a presentation of the results of this semester's study will be delivered to the Poughkeepsie Mayor and Common Council.

Both presentations will include a verbal report along with a 50-page written report, and a 12-minute video.

The Poughkeepsie Institute, the nation's first and only collaboration between several colleges and a municipality stresses team-taught, multidisciplinary efforts which emphasize direct field research. The Institute members are: Bard College, The Culinary Institute of America, Dutchess Community College, Marist College, SUNY New Paltz, Vassar College, and the City of Poughkeepsie.

This report is the result of an intense 14-week study by twenty-five students from the six colleges, guided by five faculty members - a marketing expert, a lawyer, an ethnographer, an historian and a filmmaker.

These findings, intending to foster wider community discussion, bring a crisp articulation and fresh analysis of environmental concerns, political configurations, and community relationships to local waterfront development issues.
