Cyndi Lauper and Garth Hudson star in "Largo: A Musical" at Vassar's Powerhouse

Cyndi Lauper. That's right. Cyndi Lauper will star in David Henry Hwang's "Largo: A Musical" at the Powerhouse/New York Stage and Film's Susan Stein Shiva Theater at Vassar College from Friday, July 6, through Sunday, July 8. "Largo" will also feature a special guest appearance by Garth Hudson, founding member of The Band.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. on Friday; at 2 and 8 p.m. on Saturday; and at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15.

At the 27th annual Grammy awards in February 1985, Cyndi Lauper may have been the odds-on choice as Best New Artist (which she won). But it is to her credit that, in a year dominated by Tina Turner's "comeback," Springsteen's "Born In the USA," and Prince's "Purple Rain," that Lauper was also honored with nominations for Album of the Year ("She's so Unusual"), Record Of the Year ("Girls Just Want To Have Fun"), and Song Of the Year ("Time After Time," co-written by Lauper with Rob Hyman of the Hooters).

"She's So Unusual" was produced by Rick Chertoff who collaborated in the studio with long-time friends Hyman and Eric Bazilian. Chertoff and Hyman will join Lauper at the Powerhouse as producers of "Largo: A Musical."

Based on the album produced by Chertoff and Hyman (with a new book by David Henry Hwang), "Largo: A Musical" mixes folk, blues, rock, and the voices of our musical ancestors into a groundbreaking new theatrical adventure. Hwang's plays include "Golden Child," "M. Butterfly," "Bondage," "The Dance and the Railroad," and "FOB," which have collectively been honored with the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and two OBIE Awards. He has written books for the musicals "AIDA" and the upcoming "Flower Drum Song." Screenplays include "M. Butterfly," "Golden Gate," "The Lost Empire" (a television miniseries), and the upcoming "Possession."

"Largo" is directed by Ethan Silverman who has directed new plays, revivals, and performance pieces at many venues around the country, including M.C.C. Theater, BAM/Majestic, Carnegie Hall, Westbeth Theater, E.S.T., Naked Angels, and the American Jewish Theater, among many others. In film, he directed "The Waiting Children," a documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998, and the short "Central Park," also premiered at Sundance in 1997 and on PBS in 1998. Silverman also curated and wrote the introduction for Rivka Katvan's photography book, "Backstage" (Harry N. Abrams) currently in bookstores.

Chertoff is a five-time Grammy nominee including two for Record of the Year, two for Album of the Year, and one for Producer of the Year. He produced Lauper's multi Grammy-nominated debut album "She's So Unusual," including the hits "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "Time After Time" (cowritten by Hyman), "All Through The Night," "She Bop" (cowritten by Chertoff), and "One of Us."

Hudson is a founding member of The Band. According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, The Band, "more than any other group, reconnected rock and roll with its antecedents."
