An exhibition exploring the evolving relationship between reading and the visual experience in modern art will open at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, on June 29.
"Summer Reading: the Recreation of Language in Twentieth-Century Art," which will run through September 16 in the Lehman Loeb Art Center's Drawings Galleries, will bring together the work of such painters, writers, graphic artists, photographers, books artists, and conceptualists as Willem de Kooning, Marcel Duchamp, Ed Ruscha, and Sophie Calle. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
"Summer Reading" will reexamine the history of modern art as an ongoing process of interplay between words and images. Included are artist/poet collaborations, works that blur the line between the drawn and the written gesture, experiments in typography and binding, and works that allude to forms of "picture writing" such as graffiti and the comics. Featured artists and writers include Josef Beuys, Jenny Holzer, Paul Klee, Saul Steinberg, Paul Klee, Stephane Mallarmé, René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, and Xu Bing. A complimentary illustrated checklist and essay by curator Joel Smith will accompany the exhibition.
Admission to the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center is free. The Loeb is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, from 1 to 5 p.m. The Art Center is wheelchair accessible. For more information, call (845) 437-5632 or visit http://fllac.vassar.edu/.
