Professor Laurence Steinberg, a Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at Temple University, will speak on Tuesday, October 2, in Vassar's Rockefeller Hall, about the relationship between adolescent development and juvenile justice in the United States. Steinberg, a 1974 Vassar College graduate, will examine whether policies like "adult time for adult crime" are sensible. His lecture is free and open to the public.
Steinberg is a nationally recognized expert on psychological development, often consulted in policy issues relating to juvenile justice, child labor and secondary education, by state and federal agencies, as well as National Public Radio and the New York Times. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 scholarly articles on growth and development during the teenage years, as well as numerous books and textbooks.
His lecture will pose questions such as the circumstances under which juvenile offenders should be tried as adults, raised by recent cases like the widely publicized murder trials involving Florida boys Nathaniel Brazill or Lionel Tate. He will suggest ways to improve juvenile justice policy and practice.
