Author of “The Making of the Atomic Bomb” to speak at Vassar College, Thursday, September 20

Richard Rhodes, author of 17 books including "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" will lecture at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, in the Villard Room, Main Building, Vassar College.

Rhodes is the William Starr/Freshman Course Writer-in-Residence. His talk is free of charge and open to the public.

Rhodes has written 17 books spanning a remarkable number of literary genres. Four of his books have been novels, and his works of history and journalism have ranged over topics as diverse as farming in America, serial murder, mad cow disease, and the development of nuclear weapons. His book, "The Making of the Atomic Bomb," won the Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, and a National Book Critics Circle Award. "Dark Sun," which describes the development of the hydrogen bomb, was a finalist for the Pulitzer. His autobiography of his childhood, "A Hole in the World," describes a successful struggle to overcome extreme hardship and abuse, and does so with grace and insight. "How to Write," summarizes in compelling language what Rhodes has learned from a lifetime of writing, in the hope of inspiring new generations of writers.

Richard Rhodes received his degree from Yale University and lives in rural Connecticut.
