Poet John Ashbery to read at Vassar, September 13

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet John Ashbery will read his poetry on Thursday, September 13, at 5:30 p.m. in Taylor Hall (room 203) at Vassar College. A reception will follow at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center. The reading and reception are free of charge and open to the public.

The event marks the conclusion of the exhibition "Summer Reading: The Recreation of Language In Twentieth-Century Art," which runs through Sunday, September 16, in the Art Center's Prints and Drawings Galleries. "Summer Reading" surveys the use of language as a visual and conceptual element in the work of 50 artists of the past century, including Willem de Kooning, Marcel Duchamp, Ed Ruscha, and Jenny Holzer.

Widely regarded as one of the most important poets writing in any language, Ashbery is also a respected art critic and cultural observer whose work has intersected with dozens of artists in the exhibition. Ashbery is a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award (all for "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror," 1975), and countless other honors. Widely regarded as one of the most important poets writing in any language, Ashbery is also a respected art critic and cultural observer. His most recent collections of poems are "Girls on the Run" (1999) and "Your Name Here' (2000). His 1989-90 Charles Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard University were published as "Other Traditions" (2000). A selection of his assorted prose pieces and a new collection of poems, "As Umbrellas Follow Rain," are forthcoming.
