Groundbreaking theorist to speak on "UK Blak - From the Colour Bar to Post-Colonial Melancholia" at Vassar, November 19

Paul Gilroy, author of "The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness," will lecture at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 19, in the Villard Room, Main Building, Vassar College.

The lecture, sponsored by the Program in Africana Studies as part of a year-long lecture series, is titled "UK Blak - From the Colour Bar to Post-Colonial Melancholia." It is free and open to the public.

Gilroy, a professor of sociology in the African-American Studies Department at Yale, has contributed a great deal to African Diasporic intellectual and political exchange. Besides his lauded "Black Atlantic," Gilroy has written "Small Acts: Thoughts On The Politics of Black Cultures" and "There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack." Gilroy challenges modernist discourse, arguing that definitions of modernity are based on "cultural insiderism," which he defines in "The Black Atlantic" as "an absolute sense of ethnic difference."

In addition to teaching, Gilroy works as a DJ and music journalist, so he remains close to the sites of Black popular cultural production.

He is currently working on a book on bio-politics, revolutionary conservatism, and fascism.
