American minority experience is topic of lecture at Vassar, November 15

Gary Y. Okihiro will lecture on the American minority experience at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 15, in Taylor Hall, room 203, at Vassar College.

Okihiro is the 2001 John Christie Lecturer presented by the Program in American Culture. His talk, titled "Toward a Pacific Civilization," is free and open to the public.

Okihiro has written eight influential books on the Asian-American experience in the United States, including "Margins and Mainstreams: Asians in American History and Culture," "Common Ground: Reimagining American History," and his forthcoming book "Columbia Guide to Asian American History." His other books and over 18 published articles and book chapters explore his other fields of expertise, African studies, African-American studies, and historical linguistics.

Currently at Columbia University as a professor in the Department of International and Public Affairs, and the program director of Asian American Studies at the Center for Ethnicity and Race, Okihiro has been honored as the recipient of 17 scholarly awards and appointments.
