Legendary jazz bassist Ron Carter in concert at Vassar, November 9

"An Evening with Ron Carter and His Jazz Quartet" will feature Carter, the most-recorded bassist in history, in concert at Vassar College's Skinner Hall at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 9. The concert, a Dickinson-Kayden Event, is free and open to the public.

Carter comes to Poughkeepsie to support "When Skies are Gray," his latest solo recording after more than 3,000 recordings as a leader and sideman. From helping to set the course on the rhythm end of Miles Davis' classic quartet of the sixties, to groundbreaking work with the rap trio "A Tribe Called Quest," Carter's playing pushes each era's music frontiers.

Aside from working with Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter in Davis's band, Carter has also toured or recorded with artists including Thelonious Monk, Jaki Byard, Chet Baker, Gil Scott-Heron, and Aretha Franklin.

"When Skies are Gray" is Carter's first Latin-focused jazz album, and, some believe, his finest recording yet. Its depth of passion is an ode to his wife of 41 years, who passed away a week before he went to the studio to begin recording.
