Native American novelist Louis Owens will read from his fiction at Vassar College on Tuesday, February 1, at 5:30 p.m. in the Blanche Brumback Spitzer Auditorium, Eleanor Butler Sander Hall. The reading, sponsored by the Department of English, is free and open to the public.
He is the 2000 Vassar College M.A.P. Smith Writer in Residence for Creative Writing. Owens, who is of Choctaw-Cherokee-Irish descent, is professor of literature at the University of New Mexico. He is the author of five novels: "Wolf Song" and "The Sharpest Sight," winners of France's distinguished Roman Noir award for outstanding mystery novel of 1995; "Bone Game"; "Nightland," winner of the American Book Award for 1997; and most recently "Dark River." His scholarly books include "Mixedblood Messages: Literature, Film, Family, Place" and "Other Destinies: Understanding the American Indian Novel," which is widely regarded as the preeminent study of Native American literature.
