John Solum, assisited by flutist Richard Wyton, harpsichordist Linda Skernick, and cellist Arthur Fiacco, will perform in Skinner Recital Hall at Vassar College on Sunday, February 20, at 3 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
The program will include works by J.S. Bach, Leo Kraft, Harvey Sollberger, Jean-Marie Leclair, and Meyer Kupferman. Solum, lecturer in music at Vassar, has performed as a soloist and chamber music player in 37 countries, with recital appearances in venues ranging from Queen Elizabeth Hall in London to the Frick Collection in New York to the Library of Congress in Washington. His engagements have brought him to more than 50 cities, and include the Philadelphia Orchestra, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, English Sinfonia, Irish Radio-TV Orchestra, Kuentz Paris Chamber Orchestra, and Clarion Orchestra. An influential figure in the early music movement, Solum is currently artistic director of the Connecticut Early Music Festival. His discography includes over 50 works for flute on many European and American labels, and reflects his interest in both modern and early flute music.
Skernick has been a member of Tafelmusik and the New York Baroque Consort, and has served as a harpsichordist of the New Haven Symphony and Orchestra New England. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School of music and is on the music faculty of Connecticut College.
Wyton has performed with the Helicon Ensemble under Albert Fuller, with the Grande Bande under Frederick Renz, at the festivals of Wolf Trapp, Music Mountain, and Connecticut Early Music. He has made solo recordings for Arabesque, CRI, Epiphany, and Music Minus One.
Fiacco maintains an active career on both period and modern cello. He has performed with the American Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, New York City Ballet Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Stamford Symphony, among others, and at the festivals of Wolf Trap, Music Mountain, and Connecticut Early Music. Fiacco has recorded for EMI, MGM, RCA, ECM, Columbia, Sony, Newport Classics, and Epiphany.
