Andrea Baldeck photographs come to Vassar College, February 25

"Venice: A Personal View," photographs by Andrea Baldeck, will be on display at Vassar's College Center Gallery Friday, February 25, through Thursday, March 16. There will be an opening reception on Friday, February 25, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the gallery.

After graduating from Vassar in 1972 as a music major with an avid interest in photography, Baldeck went on to medical school, residency, and practice. Twenty years later, she returned to the serious pursuit of photography, establishing a professional darkroom and studio. Portrait, still life, and landscape work have occupied her in the Philadelphia area, as well as in such disparate locations as Venice, Paris, Haiti, and the Grenadines. Her images have been published in three books and several museum catalogues, and have hung in shows both in the United States and abroad. "Venice: A Personal View" will travel to the DuPont Gallery at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where it will open on April 10 and run through May 12. "Where words sometimes fail, images speak. This collection, by no means comprehensive or documentary, represents one viewpoint of Venice in its long and varied history. While endlessly photographed, perhaps more than any other Western city, she nevertheless continues to seduce the eye, as changes of light, tide, and weather play over layers of history. These prints, I hope, will provide that point of embarkation for the viewer, a two-dimensional entrée into a dramatically three-dimensional, sensorially rich world," Baldeck writes of her work. Baldeck's photographs have been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, including the Museum of Applied Arts, Helsinki, Finland (1996); the Cosmopolitan Club (1996), Philadelphia; the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1997); the Helen Drutt Gallery, Philadelphia (1998); Vassar College (1999); and the Fleisher Art Museum, Philadelphia (1999).
