"Baseball in Cuba: the American Past-Time in a Socialist Land" is the subject of a lecture by Roberto González Echevarría at Vassar College on Thursday, March 2, at 5:30 p.m. in Taylor Hall, room 203. The Latin American Studies Program sponsors the lecture, which is free and open to the public.
Echevarría is the Sterling Professor of Hispanic and Comparative Literature at Yale University. One of the foremost scholars of Latin American Studies in the United States, he is the author, among other books, of "The Pride ofHavana: A History of Cuban Baseball" (Oxford 1999), "Myth and Archive: A Theory of Latin American Narrative" (Duke 1998), "Alejo Carpentier: The Pilgrim at Home" (U Texas 1990), and "The Voice of the Masters: Writing and Authority in Modern Latin American Literature" (University of Texas, 1988), as well as the co-editor of the three-volume "Cambridge History of Latin American Literature." Echevarría is chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Yale.
