Eduardo Navega will conduct the Vassar College Orchestra in a concert sure to please adults and children of all ages on Saturday, April 1 at 3 p.m. The performance, to be given in Skinner Recital Hall on the Vassar campus, is open to the public and free of charge.
The program will include Beethoven's "Egmont Overture"; Mendelssohn's "Fingal's Cave Overture"; Bizet's "Carmen Suite"; Gershwin's "Summertime" from "Porgy and Bess," sung by soprano Chinwe Enu; and Saint-Saens' "Morceau de Concert," with Mark Wochner, euphonium.
Navega is visiting assistant professor and director of orchestral activities at Vassar. He was born in São Paulo, Brazil, where he began his music studies at an early age. While conductor of the University of São Paulo Choir from 1978 to 1989, Navega wrote a number of arrangements of Brazilian popular songs for choir, most of which are still in the repertoire of choirs throughout Brazil. Navega has conducted the Campinas Symphony Orchestra in Brazil, the University of Sheffield Chamber Orchestra in England, and the Varna Symphony Orchestra in Bulgaria. In 1995, he was awarded the prize of "Up and Coming Conductor of the Year" by the APCA, a prestigious critics association in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. He is currently completing his doctor of musical arts degree in orchestral conducting at the Hart School of Music in Hartford.
Enu and Wochner are juniors at Vassar College.
