The Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance at Vassar College is co-sponsoring a Take Back the Night march and vigil on Friday, April 7. Vassar students organized the event in conjunction with representatives from the Family Partnership Center and Battered Women's Services at the YWCA. The march will be proceeded at 5:30 p.m. by a rally and a self-defense demonstration at the Family Partnership Center, 29 N. Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie. At 7 p.m., participants are scheduled to march, beginning and ending at the Family Partnership Center. The march will be followed by a vigil and speakout from 8:30 to 10 p.m.
The purpose of Take Back the Night is to bring community members together to end violence and abuse against women. The first Take Back the Night was held in Germany in 1973 in response to a series of sexual assaults, rapes, and murders. A few years later, shortly after the introduction of the Equal Rights Amendment in this country, the first U.S. march was held in San Francisco.
