Seventh annual mathematics conference scheduled at Vassar College, April 8

Mathematics students from Maine to New Jersey will gather at Vassar College on April 8 for the seventh annual Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC). This one-day event gives undergraduate students of mathematics the experience of attending and presenting their work at a professional mathematics meeting. All talks are free of charge and open to the public, registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m. in Rockefeller Hall.

The program consists of a series of talks by students and faculty as well as a keynote address titled "The Chinese Remainder Theorem," by Peter Hilton. Hilton, a mathematician from the State University of New York at Binghamton, is the author of several books, including "Mathematical Reflections," a popular account of what it means to be a mathematician, and how to become one. More than a hundred talks are planned with participants from more than 30 colleges and universities. Student's talks are organized into topics that span many branches of mathematics and will include sessions on fractals and chaos, voting and game theory, history of mathematics, cryptology, econometrics, and social economics.
