“Troubling Education: ÎQueer’ Activism and Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy,” to be lecture topic at Vassar College, April 10

"Troubling Education: 'Queer' Activism and Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy," will be the topic of a talk by Kevin Kumashiro at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 10, in Taylor Hall, room 203, Vassar College. The presentation, sponsored by Education Department at Vassar College, is free of charge and open to the public.

Kumashiro, the minority scholar in residence in the education department at Swarthmore College, will discuss the issues involved in education that work against oppression. He will elaborate on the idea of teaching and learning "through crisis" and address the role of anti-oppressive pedagogy in fostering activism among students. Kumashiro's recent publications include: "Toward a Theory of Anti-Oppressive Education" in Review of Educational Research; "Supplementing Normalcy and Otherness: Queer Asian American Men Reflect on Stereotypes, Identity, and Oppression" in Qualitative Studies in Education; "Reading Queer Asian American Masculinities and Sexualities in Elementary School" in Queering, "Elementary Education: Advancing the Dialogue about Sexualities and Schooling"; and "'Barbie,' 'Big Dicks,' and 'Faggots': Paradox, Performativity, and Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy" in the Journal of Curriculum Theorizing. He is also the editor of forthcoming book titled "Troubling Intersections of Race and Sexuality: Queer Students of Color and Anti-Oppressive Education."
