A.J. Downing and American landscape gardening is the subject of a Vassar College lecture, April 18

"To Live in the New World: A.J. Downing and American Landscape Gardening," a lecture by Judith K. Major, a professor at the University of Kansas, will be presented on Tuesday, April 18, at 6 p.m. in Taylor Hall, room 203, Vassar College.

Major began her academic career studying French and Chinese at Georgetown University. Thomas Jefferson's campus at the University of Virginia was the setting for her Masters in landscape architecture. After several years of practice and teaching, she earned a Ph.D. in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, where she worked in the Louis I. Kahn Collection and Architectural Archives, and in 1987 was a visiting lecturer in Theories of Landscape Architecture.

Major has taught at the University of Kansas since 1988 and during that time has been awarded numerous research fellowships, most recently from the American Philosophical Society and the Graham Foundation. She has lectured in the US and abroad, and has published in the Journal of Garden History, Journal of Architectural Education, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Land, and contributed an essay to L'architettura dei giardini d'Occidente (Milan, 1990). Her book "To Live in the New World: A. J. Downing and American Landscape Gardening" was published by MIT Press in 1997.

Major's lecture, which is free of charge and open to the public, is sponsored by the Program in Environmental Studies, the Program in American Culture, and the Art Department.
