Vassar College Orchestra to perform at Vassar, April 28

The Vassar College Orchestra, conducted by Eduardo Navega and featuring student concerto soloists, will perform in concert in Skinner Recital Hall at Vassar College on Friday, April 28, at 8 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

Included in the program are works by Beethoven, Mozart, Barber, Shostakovich, and Fauré. David Meyer, Vassar class of 2003, will be the cello soloist in Fauré's Elegie for Cello and Orchestra.

Navega is visiting assistant professor and director of orchestral activities at Vassar. He was born in São Paulo, Brazil, where he began his music studies at an early age. While conductor of the University of São Paulo Choir from 1978 to 1989, Navega wrote a number of arrangements of Brazilian popular songs for choir, most of which are still in the repertoire of choirs throughout Brazil. Navega has conducted the Campinas Symphony Orchestra in Brazil, the University of Sheffield Chamber Orchestra in England, and the Varna Symphony Orchestra in Bulgaria. In 1995, he was awarded the prize of "Up and Coming Conductor of the Year" by the APCA, a prestigious critics association in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. He is currently completing his doctor of musical arts degree in orchestral conducting at the Hart School of Music in Hartford.
