Vassar College Offers a Solution to Kids at Loose Ends

Vassar College will provide a fun and inexpensive way for girls, boys, and their parents to enjoy the summer while learning valuable game tips from an accomplished team of college coaches. Following the outstanding success of last year's Vassar College Sports Camps, four new programs have been added this year.

Summer often brings scheduling problems for working parents. These camps can alleviate that problem while ensuring sports fans, ages 7-18, enjoy an exciting mix of drills and games. The day camps typically run from 8:30 a.m.­5 p.m., accommodating working parent's schedules. The residential programs provide campers with a safe and comfortable environment in the Vassar residence halls, with full access to the college campus and facilities.

At the Vassar College Volleyball Camp, August 1-4, girls and boys ages 12- 18, will learn individual and team skills, such as serving, passing, setting, hitting, blocking, and floor defense. The camp will be led by the head Women's and Men's Volleyball Coach Jonathan Penn who has been with Vassar college since 1996 and has vast coaching experience. The campers will stay in the residence halls at Vassar College and will receive a camp T-shirt, workout booklet, and a certificate of participation. This camp features individual videotape skill analysis, a unique service which allows participants to watch how they play and learn how to correct problem areas. This residential program will cost $250.

Fundamentals and fun are the cornerstones of the Vassar College head women's basketball coach, Steve Buonfiglio's camp. The Girl's Basketball Day Camp, July 10-13, offers girls ages 10-15, instruction on basketball techniques. Buonfiglio has been coaching at Vassar since 1990. During the summer of 1997 he coached at the World-Scholar Games. The program will cover basic stations, games, and contests and will include camp T-shirt, basketball, workout booklet, awards, and a certificate, in addition to an all-you-can-eat hot lunch. The four-day program costs $175.

The Vassar College Girl's Field Hockey Camp, July 7-10, and the Vassar College Girl's Lacrosse Camp, July 11-14, for girls grades 5 through 12, are designed to teach in-dividual skills and team concepts to both the beginner and the experienced player. Campers will refine basic skills and learn new strategies consistent with the latest trends in the sport from Coach Judy Finerghty. Finerghty, who has been with Vassar since 1993, is credited with starting the first women's varsity lacrosse program at the State University of New York at Albany. Both the field hockey and the lacrosse camps include a T-shirt, awards, and certificates. Outdoor instruction will be held on the state-of-the-art Prentiss Field with indoor instruction at Walker Field House. These residential programs cost $250 each with a discount for athletes attending both camps.

On June 26-30 two of Vassar's popular summer day camps will return. Vassar's head men's basketball coach Mike Dutton will lead boys age 7-15 at the Vassar College Boy's Basketball Camp. This camp costs $185 and includes lunch at the All Campus Dining Center (ACDC). The Vassar College Soccer Camp, a coed camp for ages 7-12, returning for its second year, will be led by the men's soccer coach Chris Parsons. This camp costs $185, including lunch at ACDC, or $175 if campers bring their own lunch. There is a 10 percent discount for each additional camper enrolled in the soccer camp from the same family.
