Vassar's Palmer Gallery presents paintings by Laura Newman

Paintings by Laura Newman will be on display at Vassar's James W. Palmer III '90 Gallery in the College Center (formerly the College Center Gallery) from Thursday, August 24, through Sunday, October 1. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, September 23, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Newman's paintings, which are inspired by Matisse, Asian painting, and childhood memories, "explore the boundaries between meaning and non-meaning," according to the "New Art Examiner." Newman, an adjunct assistant professor of art at Vassar, holds BFA degrees in painting from the Cooper Union School of Art and the California Institute of the Arts. Newman also studied in the graduate program at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

She has shown her work in solo exhibitions at the Tenri and Victoria Munroe galleries in New York City and in group exhibi-tions at Rutgers University, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Art at the Rhode Island School of Design, and the American Academy in Rome, among many others.

The College Center Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For information call (845) 437-5370.
