Hanoverian Ensemble to perform at Vassar, October 1

The Hanoverian Ensemble performs the music of the Baroque and Classical eras on period instruments. It was formed by Solum with flutist and recorder player Richard Wyton and cellist Arthur Fiacco, all formerly principal players in the Connecticut Early Music Festival. Other musicians performing with the ensemble are harpsichordist Linda Skernick, violinist Mary Hoyt, violist Monica Gerard, violone player Jay Elfenbein, and bassoonist Thomas Sefcovic.

Solum made his debut as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and has performed in 37 countries, with recital appearances in venues ranging from Queen Elizabeth Hall in London to the Frick Collection in New York to the Library of Congress in Washington. An influential figure in the early music movement, Solum is currently artistic director of the Connecticut Early Music Festival, and was previously the director of the annual Bath Summer School of Baroque Music in England. His discography includes over 50 works for flute and reflects his interest in both modern and early flutes. Among his recordings are the Mozart Flute Concertos (EMI) and the Bach Flute Sonatas (Arabesque), all recorded on period instruments, and the concertos of Ibert, Jolivet, Honegger, and Malcolm Arnold (EMI), which are recorded on modern flute.

Solum has taught at Vassar College since 1969.
