Illustrations and other work by Nancy Willard will be on display at Vassar's James W. Palmer III '90 Gallery in the College Center (formerly the College Center Gallery) from Thursday, October 5, through Wednesday, October 25.
Willard, a lecturer in English at Vassar College, was educated at the University of Michigan and Stanford. She has written numerous books for both adults and children. Her collection of poems for children, "A Visit to William Blake's Inn," illustrated by Dutchess County artists Alice and Martin Provensen, was a Newbery winner and a Caldecott Honor book.
Willard illustrated "The Octopus Who Wanted to Juggle," by Robert Pack (Galileo Press, 1990); "An Alphabet of Angels" (Scholastic, 1994); "The Good-night Blessing Book" (Scholastic, 1996); and "The Magic Cornfield" (Harcourt Brace, 1997).
She has been included in several group shows. Her work is presently on display at Storyopolis in Los Angeles.
"Works by Nancy Willard" will include illustrations related to her four books, along with decorated furniture and a stove. Emily Dickinson appears on one of the chairs and a passage from Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen" is on the back of another. The stove, called "The Back Burner," is designed as a place to keep work in progress.
Next spring, Harcourt will publish a book of Willard's poems for children, "The Moon and Riddles Diner and the Sunnyside Cafe." Several of the poems will be included in this show.
