Gallagher to perform an organ tribute to Bach at Vassar Chapel, October 29

Organist Merellyn Gallagher will perform works by Bach and Schumann on Sunday, October 29, at 3:30 p.m., in the Chapel at Vassar College. The concert is free and open to the public.

Gallagher will play on a 1967 Gress-Miles organ designed to handle all styles of organ literature. The program will feature works of Bach honoring the 250th anniversary of his death; and also Franck, Schumann, and Howells, who were all directly or indirectly paying homage to Bach with their compositions.

Gallagher has studied with Catharine Ames, Vernon Gotwals, Helmut Walcha, and Heinrich Fleischer. She teaches organ and harpsichord at Vassar and has been director of music at Grace Church in Millbrook since 1970. Gallagher has served in various capacities in the Central Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She was the festival organist for Dutchess County interfaith music festivals in 1977 and 1990. Gallagher has been a member of the Vassar faculty since 1972.
