Actress and Vassar College alumna Frances Sternhagen (class of 1951) will visit Vassar College on Monday, November 6 as the President's Distinguished Visitor for 2000. She will deliver a public lecture at 5 p.m. in the Villard Room, Main Building.
Sternhagen, active in theater, film, and television, will also meet with drama and English classes during her visit. She most recently starred off-Broadway in "The Exact Center of the Universe." Nominated six times for a Tony Award, she has received it twice, as well as the Clarence Derwent, the Delia Austrian Medal from the Drama League, two Drama Desks, two Obies, and the Sydney Kingsley-Madge Evans Award.
Recently inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame, she has appeared on Broadway in "On Golden Pond," "You Can't Take it With You," "Equus," "Grownups," "The Sign in Sydney Brustein's Window," "Angel," and "Home Front." Off-Broadway, she starred most recently as Miss Daisy in "Driving Miss Daisy," and played Margaret in Terrence McNally's "A Perfect Ganesh."
Besides "Cheers," she has appeared on television's "Sex and the City," "E.R.," "Law and Order," Stephen King's "Golden Years," "The Con," "The Road Home," and numerous other programs.
Sternhagen was also featured in films including "Independence Day," "Raising Cain," "Outland," "Hospital," "Starting Over," and "Sibling Rivalry."
The Distinguished Visitor Program invites alumnae/i who have risen to the heights of their profession. Recent visitors have included Meryl Streep in 1997 and Jane Kramer in 1994.
