Vassar College Madrigal Singers to perform, November 19

The Vassar College Madrigal Singers, a select auditioned ensemble of 10 singers specializing in the music of the Renaissance and the more challenging chamber repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 19, in Skinner Recital Hall, Vassar College.

The concert, sponsored by the Vassar College Music Department, is free of charge and open to the public.

The program pairs two masterpieces: Johann Sebastian Bach's sublime funeral motet based on the Lutheran chorale "Jesu meine Freude," and Englishman Benjamin Britten's "Hymn to Saint Cecelia," the patron saint of music (as well as the saint of Britten' birthday, November 22), with text by W.H. Auden. Madrigals by Johnson, Bennett, and Banchieri are also on the program.

The Vassar College Madrigal Singers are conducted by Charles Kamm, visiting assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, and accompanied on the organ by Merrelyn Gallagher.

A tenor and countertenor, Kamm remains active as a soloist and choral singer, recently recording for the Choir of the Church of the Advent in Boston. Gallagher has been director of music at Grace Church in Millbrook since 1970, served in various capacities in the Central Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and has been a member of the Vassar faculty since 1972.
